The Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay meet our social and recreational needs and are important to the livelihoods of farmers, fishers and businesses across Victoria. The Yarra and bay are interconnected ecosystems. Water quality in Port Phillip Bay is impacted by inputs from its river catchments and the Yarra is the largest of these.
Natural events such as algal blooms and fish deaths occur from time to time but can be influenced by human activities. Other issues like stormwater, litter and pollution are the result of urban environments and human actions.
