Forecasting

Between 1 December 2018 and 11 March 2019, Beach Report forecasts for 36 bay beaches twice a day. Good predicts that recreational water quality is suitable for swimming, Fair means that recreational water quality is good but could be affected by rainfall particularly if the beach is close to a stormwater outlet, and Poor is a warning that means you should avoid contact with the water.

Forecasts are also available on Twitter and forecast signs at life saving club beaches (on weekend and public holidays).

Beach Report forecast sign at a beach

An alert will be issued via this website and Twitter when water quality is Unacceptable for swimming.

Forecasts are based on observed and predicted rainfall, recreational water quality history, sunlight, weekly sampling and pollution reports.

Beach Report Q&As

What is Beach Report?

Beach Report is a program that forecasts and monitors bacterial water quality at 36 beaches in Port Phillip Bay over the summer period. Twice daily, a forecast of ‘Good’, ‘Fair’ or ‘Poor’ is given for each of the 36 beaches.

Good = Good water quality, is suitable for swimming

Fair = Fair may not be suitable for swimming; check for signs of stormwater pollution before swimming e.g. stormwater drains flowing, discoloured water, odour, rubbish and debris along the water’s edge

Poor = Poor is unsuitable for swimming

How does EPA determine the forecast for the beach?

The forecast is based on weather forecasts (observed and forecast rain), cloud cover, water quality history and weekly water sampling results. Forecasters also check for weather and flood warnings, and Yarra and Bay water quality alerts for pollution, fish deaths and algal blooms. Further details, including the matrix used to forecast water quality, is available here.

What is the usual summer period for Beach Report?

Beach Report runs from the beginning of December to the end of Victoria’s Labour Day long weekend in March.

How do I know whether a swim advisory has been issued for a beach?

To find out whether an advisory has been issued for a beach, check the Alerts page. Alternatively, you can check Twitter @EPA Victoria or register for SMS notifications here (forecasts get downgraded to poor if a swim advisory is issued). EPA also works with councils to put signs up at affected beaches. Lifesaving clubs will have signs to inform swimmers of water quality forecasts and other water conditions for swimming over weekends and public holidays.

Why isn’t Beach Report conducted all year round?

The Beach Report program is conducted in the warmer months when people are most likely to swim at beaches and are therefore more likely to be exposed to bacterial pollution in the water. A Beach Report season may be extended if there are seasonal outlooks for warmer than average temperatures.

No matter the temperature, EPA advises to avoid swimming near stormwater or river outlets 24-48 hours after heavy rain. Recreational users should always check for signs of stormwater pollution before swimming e.g. stormwater drains flowing, discoloured water, odour, rubbish and debris along the water’s edge.
