Experience art and culture on the Yarra

Herring Island as viewed from the air

While the weather is still warm, take in everything the Yarra River has to offer with the annual Herring Island Summer Arts Festival.

Open on weekends as well as Labour Day and Easter Monday, the Island's gallery is currently showing ‘Drift’ from the Basketmakers of Victoria, with works from Contemporary Art Society of Victoria (CAS) and an exclusive A4 Art Australia exhibit to follow.

Follow the exhibition with a stroll around the island’s permanent sculpture trail, maintained by volunteers, to experience the diverse native flora and fauna this picturesque Yarra location has to offer.

Herring Island is only accessible by boat, but is conveniently close to parking, bike tracks and public transport. Visitors can catch the Parks Victoria punt from Como Landing.

Visitors to ‘Drift’ over the next two weeks can explore displays of fibre, baskets and sculpture, while also observing and learning the art of basket making.

‘Contemporary by Nature’ by CAS society members will follow, displaying a range of media and with artists on site certain days to discuss their work.

Exclusive to Herring Island, A4 Art Australia will show a range of Australian artists’ with varied subjects and styles.

The festival runs until 17 April 2017, with gallery opening hours 11.30am-4.30pm.
